How to Pass Dogs During Walks
It’s important to focus on the relationship you have with your dog, not the relationship your dog has with strange dogs or people. Don’t rush to get to this step there is no finishing line to your training. Focus on progress, not perfection and if you and your dog are not ready for this step, don’t do it!
While you are going through this training process don’t go into busy areas where there are lots of distractions. You are also learning new skills and how to handle a leash so make it easy on yourself. You’ll get back to a busier area. Find yourself a quiet street or country road to walk your dog so that you can really focus on your handling and building your relationship.
It’s ok to not approach other dogs, especially if it makes your dog nervous or forces your dog to accept a stranger touching it. If you were having a peaceful walk with a loved one would you want a stranger running up to you and wanting to touch you? Remember you have your dog for YOU, not the public.
Our expectation is that the dog just be at peace and be able to be around other dogs, without touch (your dog can smell another dog from a mile away) and don’t react. Watch the word go by, smell the air but don’t fixate, panic or react. Your dog will thank you!
